Softball Questions For Sotomayor

Today the United States Senate begins questioning Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor regarding her record and qualifications for a seat on our nation’s highest legal bench.
And with one member of the Senate Judiciary Committee having stated that her approval is all but assured, it appears to be a foregone conclusion that we will soon see Sotomayor as the latest Justice of the Supreme Court.
Naturally, in order to look good for the television cameras, some Senators will question her as to her views regarding abortion, gun control, and the like.
However, I just received an e-mail from one of my Senators, former RINO and now full fledged Democrat Arlen Specter, and i am amazed at what his biggest ares of concern regarding Sotomayor are:
(The following is taken directly from his message.)
“Dear Friends,
Judge Sotomayor comes to today’s Senate Conformation Hearing with an outstanding record: academically at Princeton and Yale; professionally as an Assistant District Attorney, and then serving on the District Court and the Circuit Court.
Not withstanding that fine record, it is the constitutional duty of the Senate to make inquiries and have a hearing. It is also a good opportunity for the public to gain a better understanding of how the Supreme Court works. For example, I intend to take up the question of the caseload of the Court which has been very light to Judge Sotomayor]. My suggestion is that the Supreme Court could contribute more to the clarity and uniformity of the law by taking more cases.
Similarly, I’d like Judge Sotomayor’s opinion on televising the Supreme Court to Judge Sotomayor]. I have long been an advocate of doing that, and I introduced legislation which has twice been reported out of the Judiciary Committee to televise the Court because they make the cutting edge decisions of our time. Judge Sotomayor has special insights because, on the District Court a few years back, she was part of a pilot program where her trial was televised.”
How about that for tough questions?
With all of the baggage that this woman is dragging along with her, with a record of having several of her rulings overturned by the Supreme Court, and her statements regarding “interpertation” of the law, what is Specter’s biggest worry?
That the Supreme Court has too little to do, and that hearings should be on television.
And if that isn’t bad enough, take a look at who Specter can ask for help if he gets stuck for a word.
