Repeal The Second Amendment

Recently, a person responding to one of my “Second Amendment Quote Of The Day” articles included in his response a link to a blog posting taking the position that the Second Amendment is not relevant in today’s society.
The following are some of the comments left by the folks responding to that theory:
“Maybe it’s time to admit that the Second Amendment has outlived it’s usefulness.”
“I’ve been amazed at the revolutionary fantasies these gun nuts have.”
“The Rambo wannabe crowd, bizarro world ideas, mental midgets.”
Those are just a few of the viewpoints of the folks taking the position that America no longer needs the Second Amendment.
And needless to say, I spent quite a bit of time making my own comments in defense of the right to keep and bear arms until I finally gave up, seeing that trying to use facts and logic was a waste of time.
So I thought that I would be better off spelling out things here.
The position that those of us who support the rights granted under the Second Amendment do so because we feel that someday we may need to stage a second American Revolution is so stupid as to be beyond belief.
The miniscule percentage of gun owners who feel that way have no more relevance than do the folks protesting global warming by setting fire to Hummer dealerships.
In both cases, the actions of a deranged few do not reflect the feelings of the majority.
So then the question would arise “Well then, why do you gun nuts support the Second Amendment as strongly as you do?”
And my answer to that is really quite simple.
The Second Ammendment bestows upon me the right to own a gun so that, if need be, I can use it to defend myself and my family.
And the respone to that claim is usually along the lines of “That’s not what the Founding Fathers had in mind. The Second Amendment only applies to someone who belongs to a militia!”
Anyone holding that opinion requires a history lesson, and here is a condensed version:
“. . . no free man shall be debarred the use of arms….” – Thomas Jefferson, Virginia Constitution of 1776
“Arms in the hands of citizens [may] be used at individual discretion . . . in private self-defense.” – John Adams
“The Constitution shall never be construed . . . to prevent the people of the United States who are peaceable citizens from keeping their own arms.” – Samuel Adams
Getting the idea folks?
The intent of the Second Amendment was to do precisely what it says.
However, perhaps you folks who feel that the Second Amendment doesn’t really apply in todays world don’t care about that.
In which case, I would ask you to answer a few questions for me.
Why do you feel the way you do?
Please explain to me how taking guns away from law-abiding citizens would lead to a reduction in crime, when there is overwhelming evidence, not just here in America, but throughout any democratic country in the world, that restrictions on gun ownership lead to an increase in crime rates?
Show me support for your contention that making it harder for a law-abiding citizen to obtain a firearm makes the world a safer place?
Prove to me, the operative word being prove, thatt stricter gun control laws would have prevented such mass murders as recently occured in New York.
Keep in mind that a lame argument such as “Well, it would have made it harder for him to get a gun” is not proof.
I simply can’t understand what the adovcates of stricter gun control laws are so afraid of.
None of us have any plans to try and overthrow the government.
It’s been proven time and time again that imposing restrictions on firearms ownership as a means of reducing crime has the exact opposite effect.
I just can’t comprehend what you gun control activists are so afraid of.
Maybe this guy had the right answer:
“A fear of weapons is a sign of retarded sexual and emotional maturity.” – Sigmund Freud, General Introduction to Psychoanalysis (1952)
